Not only are you preparing to undergo tooth extraction, but you’re also awaiting your new dentures. Being without your teeth is understandably something you want to avoid, but how much time must pass before you can feel confident again with the help of customized tooth replacement? Keep reading to discover the different options that are available after having one or more teeth extracted.

How Long Must You Wait to Get Dentures?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The reason is that there are a few different ways to get a fully restored smile after having your teeth removed.

One way is to live without artificial teeth for 1.5-2 months. This may not be the preferred method, but there are a few things to consider:

  • Your gums will be sore after tooth extraction, so this time will allow them to heal without bearing the weight of an immediate denture.
  • Your mouth is likely to change shape in the weeks after your extraction, so by allowing this to happen, you avoid multiple return appointments to have your dentures adjusted for a more comfortable fit.
  • You don’t have to try and adjust to a temporary denture while recovering from surgery.

The other option is to have an immediate denture put into place right after your teeth are extracted. This requires that an impression be taken of your smile before your dentist removes your pearly whites. While this can seem like the better option, you must remember that while recovering from your procedure, your gums and bone will continue to carry the weight of these dentures, which can make the recovery and adjustment phase a bit more difficult.

When Will Permanent Dentures Be Ready for Placement?

You should not expect your permanent dentures to be ready for at least several (6) months. The reason is that not only do lab technicians need time to fabricate your new teeth, but your mouth requires essential healing, and your facial shape will change while your gums heal.

This will allow for effective fittings to ensure that your finalized dentures fit comfortably when put into place. Your mouth must fully heal before they can be tried on in your dentist’s office.

While the wait may not seem ideal, it’s necessary if you want your dentures to function normally, look natural, and be comfortable each day. By exhibiting patience throughout the process, you’ll walk away with a healthier, happier and more beautiful smile.
