What Happens During a Root Canal?
The root canal process is usually performed right away during an emergency dentistry visit. The procedure begins by numbing your mouth with a local anesthetic. This means that you won’t experience any discomfort during the actual root canal treatment. Once your mouth is numb, we will open your tooth so that we can access the inner portion where the pulp is located. The infected tissue is removed, and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly sanitized to ensure that there are no harmful bacteria remaining. The space is then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. To complete the root canal process, we will typically place a crown on the treated tooth. The strength that the crown provides will allow you to continue using the tooth normally.
